Starting strength training as a woman in Las Vegas usually stalls on one question: where do you begin when a barbell feels like it belongs to someone else? This guide answers that from the coaching side, covering what a real women's strength program looks like, what the first weeks involve, and how to train in Las Vegas and Henderson without guessing your way through it.
What is women's strength training, and how is it different from a general gym program?
Women's strength training is barbell-based programming built around squat, hinge, press, and pull patterns, progressed on a schedule instead of changed at random. A general gym program leaves those variables to you. A coached strength plan specifies which lifts, which weights, and which weeks get heavier, so progress is tracked rather than hoped for.
At Built Thru It Performance, women's strength training uses the same barbell work and the same progression model the competitive athletes run, coached from wherever you are starting. Some clients have never loaded a bar. Others are returning after years away from training. Both get individualized programming instead of a template.
- Compound lifts first. Squat, deadlift, press, and row build the strength everything else sits on.
- Progressive loading. Weight, reps, or sets move up on a plan, not on how you feel that day.
- Form coaching. Technique gets corrected early, before it becomes a habit you have to unlearn.
- Weekly adjustments. The plan changes when your schedule, travel, or recovery changes.
Do you need to lift heavy weights to get stronger?
You need to lift weights that are challenging for you, which is a moving target rather than a fixed number. Strength adapts to the demand you place on the muscle and the nervous system, so a load that felt hard in week one becomes a warm-up by week eight. That mechanism works the same way for a first-time lifter as it does for a national competitor.
The practical version: your first month is about learning positions with loads light enough to repeat well. Once the pattern is reliable, the weight goes up. Skipping the first part is the most common reason new lifters end up sore, frustrated, or hurt.
What does the first month of coaching actually look like?
The first month follows a four-step framework Built Thru It Performance uses with every client, called the BTI Way.
- Assess. Movement, lifestyle, goals, and baseline. The plan starts from where you actually are, not from a generic beginner template.
- Build. Programming written around your real schedule and the equipment you can access, whether that is a full gym or a garage setup.
- Evolve. Weekly check-ins and adjustments, because progress is not linear and the plan should not pretend it is.
- Sustain. Habits that outlast the program, so the strength stays after the coaching block ends.
Nutrition support can run alongside the training if you want it. 1:1 nutrition coaching uses custom macros and weekly check-ins rather than meal templates or elimination rules, which matters for anyone who has cycled through restrictive dieting before.
Why does strength training matter beyond how you look?
Strength training gives you capability you use outside the gym: carrying groceries up stairs, moving furniture, keeping up on a hike at Red Rock, and holding good posture through a long workday. Those are the returns that keep showing up years later.
There is a second return that is harder to measure. Alexa May, who founded Built Thru It Performance, spent years as a college cheerleader under-eating and over-training because she believed smaller was better. Her coaching is built on the opposite premise, that training is about building yourself rather than shrinking yourself. For women who arrive carrying an all-or-nothing relationship with food and exercise, the barbell tends to be the thing that breaks the cycle, because the scale stops being the only number that counts.
Where can women train with a barbell in Las Vegas and Henderson?
Built Thru It Performance coaches across the Las Vegas valley and Henderson, both in person and online. There are two ways women train with the program.
- 1:1 strength coaching. Individualized programming with form coaching and weekly adjustments, available in Las Vegas, in Henderson, or fully online.
- Community lift events. Women's events such as Barbells & Blooms bring lifters together to train and learn, hosted at CrossFit Veni Vidi Vici in Henderson and at other spots around the valley. All levels, no experience required.
If you want the barbell lifts specifically, the Olympic weightlifting track covers the snatch and clean and jerk. Our earlier guide on how to start Olympic weightlifting in Las Vegas walks through that path in detail.
What should you look for in a women's strength coach in Las Vegas?
Look for coaching credentials plus lifting experience, because the two teach different things. A coach who has only competed can tell you what worked for them. A coach who has only studied can tell you the theory. You want both.
Alexa May holds USA Weightlifting Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certifications, CrossFit L1 and L2 with a gymnastics certification, and a Precision Nutrition Level 1 certification, alongside a B.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Louisville. She has competed since 2013, coached since 2015, worked with more than 300 athletes, and finished top 3 at USA Weightlifting Senior Nationals. Ask any coach you are considering for the same specifics.
Two more questions worth asking before you sign up:
- Will my program be written for me, or pulled from a library?
- How often do we check in, and what happens when my week falls apart?
What if you are not ready for monthly coaching?
A 1-Time Strategy Plan is the lower-commitment option. It is a single coaching call plus a custom written plan covering your training, nutrition, or competition prep, with no monthly commitment. Women use it to get expert eyes on a program they are already running, or to build a starting plan they can execute on their own.
There are also accessory programs in the works, which are downloadable blocks you layer onto existing training for targeted work. Ask Alexa about availability.
How do you start?
